PRESIDENT’S LETTER

It’s February now and I hope everyone’s year has started out on a good note. Things are progressing for the association. About a third of you have sent in your renewals for membership. Remember to get your subs, or anyone interested in joining to fight for the cause, to fill out an application and put you down as the sponsor. You will receive $10 off next years renewal rate for everyone you sponsor.  We need more committed members to help us keep our finger on the pulse of our government entities to make sure not only our customers but ourselves as well are not being taken advantage of. Costs will always go up, but together we can make sure those costs are really necessary and fair.

Our 2nd annual Home & Garden Expo is taking shape. Ace & Lowe’s have committed to being our gold sponsors and MEC will be a silver sponsor as well. We have received many calls about open vendor spots as well. If you haven’t gotten yours yet, you had better hurry. I think we are going to run out of space soon. With the addition of the Car & Bike Show on that Saturday I believe the attendance will surpass last years numbers. The show will be held on March 15-16 at the Mohave Crossroads Shopping center. You can download your vendor app off of our website at www.mvcaaz.org.

You can also find your renewal application on the website as well, just in case you misplaced it. Also, don’t forget to like us on Facebook.

I hope to see all of you on Wednesday February 12 at 6pm for our general dinner meeting. And don’t forget to reserve your spot online to get a chance at winning next months dinner for free.

BOARD LUNCH MEETING – January 7, 2013

Call to Order

The regular meeting of the Board of Directors was held on Tuesday, January 7, 2014, at Scooters, 2750 Miracle Mile, Bullhead City, AZ. The meeting was called to order at 11:52 a.m., by President Rick Bastyr.

Attendees

President Rick Bastyr, Vice President Larry Adams, Treasurer Steven Bouman, Secretary John Caponetto, Directors Catherine Lopez-Rajaniemi, Darryl Connella, Kim Camacho, Steve Ramsey, and Scott Merrill.

Minutes

President Bastyr asked if everyone had read the Board Minutes from last month. He then asked for a motion to approve the December Board Minutes. Vice President Adams made a motion to approve the Minutes for the December Board Meeting, and the motion was seconded by Secretary Caponetto. Secretary Caponetto asked a question regarding the times for the Home Show listed in the Minutes. The times for the Home Show were listed wrong. It should be on Saturday 9am to 5pm. On Sunday, 10am to 3pm. All were in favor. Motion passed.

Treasurer’s Report

Treasurer Bouman reported on the current Treasurer’s Report to the Board. President Bastyr asked for a motion to approve the Treasurer’s Report. Director Connella made a motion to approve the Treasurer’s Report, seconded by Vice President Adams. All were in favor. Motion passed.

Christmas Party

President Bastyr asked the members how the Christmas Party turned out. Everyone said it was excellent, great fun, great food, and good service. Vice President Adams said we need more help for next time. It’s a lot of work for the few people working on putting together a great Christmas Party. We also need to send out Thank You letters to all the factions that donated prizes for the Christmas Party. Discussion was held as to whether to continue a 40-year tradition of having a Christmas Party. It was decided to have one for 2014. Director Lopez-Rajaniemi will reserve the same room at the Edgewater Hotel/Casino for Friday, December 12, 2014.

Economic Recovery Committee

President Bastyr asked Vice President Adams if there were any updates. Vice President Adams said that they are having a meeting this Thursday, January 9th. He hopes to talk to Reuben Sanchez of BLM. Also, Vice President Adams said that Lisa McCabe said that they will be passing out 20,000 goodie bags with our brochures in them at the RV Show in Quartzsite. He said that things are looking good.

Academy of Building Industries

President Bastyr asked Treasurer Bouman if he had anything to report. Treasurer Bouman said that they are having a Board Meeting tonight. The Home Show is on the agenda. He will also talk to the school’s Sport Director about having his kids helping out at the Home Show again.

Safety Meeting

Director Merrill said that the Safety Committee will hold a meeting before the General Meeting tomorrow night. Todd from SCF told MVCA that there are papers missing, like evaluations, for the year 2013. Vice President Adams said that SCF has cancelled his company after 50 years.

Home Show

President Bastyr reported that the Home Show Committee held a meeting yesterday to discuss advertising and how to secure it. Michael Paul is putting us on the City’s Channel 4. The Noon Kiwanis are doing the food for the event. The Mohave Valley Contractors Association will be holding their 1st Annual Charity Car and Bike Show. All proceeds go towards the Academy of Building Industries. It will be good advertisement to see the cars in the parking lot and bring people in for the Home Show. We will also have an ad in the Weekender paper before the event. We have $900 to spend for advertisement. We hope to have Larry Tunsforss to do a live remote from the site. Discussion was held regarding insurance liability. We need certificates of liability from each vendor. The cutoff date for  vendors is the end of February. The next meeting for the committee will be February 4th at 11am at Scooters.

Winter Expo

Director Lopez-Rajaniemi reported that the Winter Expo will be coming up in February at the Chamber of Commerce. Do we want to have a booth and what are we going to have for marketing? We need to use some of the monies we made at last year’s Home Show.

Guest Speakers

President Bastyr asked for any ideas for future guest speakers. Vice President Adams said he has guest speakers for the months of February and March. He said he may have Rueben Sanchez of BLM. John Masterson of Golden Vortex is our guest speaker for tomorrow’s dinner meeting. It would be nice to have Jean of the Academy of Building Industries speak in May to discuss the school year. The month of April is open for the Safety Meeting. John Masterson of Golden Vortex said we could have his safety person talk to the members for free.

Winter Expo

The Winter Expo will be held at the Chamber of Commerce on February 6th and its a great place to promote our Home Show. We definitely should be there. President Bastyr asked for a motion to have a booth at the Winter Expo. Vice President Adams made a motion to have MVCA have a booth at the Winter Expo, seconded by Director Lopez-Rajaniemi. All were in favor. Motion passed. Discussion was held as to who was going to man the booth from 9am to 3pm. We will pass out a sheet at the general dinner meeting to see who will sign up to help man the booth.

New Business

President Bastyr reported on the passing of Director Don Grasse. His memorial will be held at the Chamber of Commerce this Saturday at 2pm.

Discussion was held to make Steve Ramsey a permanent Director. Treasurer Bouman made a motion to make Steve Bouman a permanent Director, seconded by Vice President Adams. All were in favor. Motion passed.

It was noted that Director Grasse, in lieu of flowers, preferred to have donations made to the Academy of Building Industries. Director Grasse was very instrumental in the formation of the school. Vice President Adams made a motion to give $500 to the school. Director Merrill seconded the motion. There was some discussion as to where in the school the $500 should be directed. Some wanted it to go directly to the Sports Department. It was decided that Treasurer Bouman and Secretary Caponetto will discuss this with Jean tonight at the school’s board meeting and find out where the $500 could best be used by the school. Also, it was suggested to discuss this matter at the general dinner meeting  tomorrow. Vice President Adams withdrew his motion. Secretary Caponetto made a motion to rescind the motion, and Director Connella seconded the motion. Motion passed.

Facebook

President Bastyr discussed the idea of Face Book to put information out there. Director Lopez-Rajaniemi also said it would be a good idea to have information regarding MVCA and events of interest on Face Book. Question was asked whether we could find out if Jean could add us on Face Book when she does the Newsletter. President Bastyr asked for a motion to put us on Face Book. Director Ramsey made a motion to see about putting us on Face Book, seconded by Director Lopez-Rajaniemi. Motion passed.

President Bastyr asked if there was anything else to discuss, and Director Lopez-Rajaniemi said she had something she wanted to report. She said that Chris Barton, of the Chamber of Commerce, wanted to tell Director Lopez-Rajaniemi that Mayor Jack Hakim asked her to see about forming a Call Center for Contractors, or doing a survey on customers who aren’t able to get call backs from contractors. There was quite a discussion on this. Question was, how do we want to handle this?

President Bastyr said that membership forms will be going out next week.

Adjournment

President Bastyr asked for a motion to adjourn. Director Connella made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Director Ramsey. All were in favor. Motion approved. Meeting adjourned at 1:10pm.

Respectively submitted,
