PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Well, here we go for another year. I would like to welcome Scott Merrill to the Board of Directors. He is replacing Steve Ramsey who has served on the board for what he say is a lifetime. Scott is also our Safety Representative.

This last month was a little hectic. The Mohave County Building Department is looking into adopting the 2012 Building Codes. We received this information after our dinner meeting in June. And with only 6 days to prepare we arranged a quick meeting with Glen Wiltse and Wendy Lewis from the Bullhead Building Department who said they have no intention on adopting these codes in the near future. They did give us some useful information on the changes from the 2006 to the 2009 and to the 2012 codes. None of which are appealing to any of us. We are very great full to have this kind of relationship with our Building Official and his staff. But that does not mean the county won’t.

Larry Adams and Steve Ramsey were able to attend the meeting on June 19 and said it was a very productive meeting, long (3 hours), but productive. Larry is confident that the board will see our side and not adopt these codes just because of the financial requirements involved. My Dad always said “If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it!” And I think that should be the slogan for this.

The next meeting will be on July 17th, 2013 and they will be discussing the 2012 International Building, Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Gas Codes. It is imperative for everyone involved in these particular trades be at that meeting. This is exactly why you joined this association. The decision this board makes is going to impact your business like never before.

The “Best of …” winners were announced on June 20, 2013. And while I personally don’t take this too seriously, there was one winner that caught our eye. Best Builder and Best Handyman Ruben Benitez.  I found it interesting that a handyman can win Best Home Builder, especially when he is not licensed in the state of Arizona or Nevada. Just goes to show you how credible this contest is. When I worked in one of the casinos many years back they put the ballots in the break room and encouraged us to vote for our casino. And I have a feeling this goes on for most of these. Maybe not all, but most.

We will start preparing for our next home show this month. If you would like to help or have some ideas we would love to hear them. Let one of the board members know and we will get you an invite to the next meeting.

An AFLAC representative will be at the dinner meeting to go over any changes or questions you may have. This is a supplement to any traditional coverage you may have. We are looking to have more information in August for the Obamacare issues.

Don’t forget to RSVP online to have a chance to win a free dinner for August. Glen Rojaniemi was our lucky winner last month and will enjoy the best free meal of his life. I look forward to seeing you on July 10 at 6PM.

BOARD LUNCH MEETING – June 11, 2013

Call to Order

The regular meeting of the Board of Directors was held on Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at Scooters, 2750 Miracle Mile, Bullhead City, AZ. The meeting was called to order at 11:49 a.m., by President Rick Bastyr.

Attendees

President Rick Bastyr, Vice President Larry Adams, Treasurer Steven Bouman, Directors Catherine Lopez-Rajaniemi, Steve Ramsey, Darryl Connella. Absent were Secretary John Caponetto, Directors Kim Camacho and Don Grasse. Our guest was Chris Barton, Chamber of Commerce.

Treasurer’s Report

Treasurer Bouman reported on the current Treasurer’s Finance Report. May expenses totaled $2,764.57. President Bastyr asked for a motion to approve the Treasurer’s Report. Vice President Adams made a motion to approve the Treasurer’s Report, seconded by Director Ramsey. All were in favor of the motion. Motion approved.

Old Business

Website

President Bastyr told the Board that he sent Jean Gallant changes to be made on the website. He went through the list of companies that have not paid their dues and if anyone knew if some of them were still in business. He will be contacting the companies that have not yet paid and Vice President Adams made a list of ones he will be contacting.

Section 12

President Bastyr asked if there was any more information regarding the City’s Section 12 plans. The City still has not given out any information on the development agreement between the City and Land Liqudators, LLC. BLM also has not given out any information on the development agreement, stating that the development agreement is still only in the draft format. Neil Young, reporter for the Mohave Daily News, also has not had any luck in getting information regarding the development agreement. No one has been able to get a council member to admit they know anything about this. There was input from most of the Board members regarding this topic.

Ad

Vice President Adams reported on the “Where to Retire Magazine” and said our ad was in it. He passed the magazine around to the Board Members so that they could review it. He gave the invoice for the ad to Treasurer Bouman. Vice President Adams said that if we get 300 inquiries on this ad, that means it’s working to bring people to this area.

Economic Recovery Committee

Chris Barton of the Chamber of Commerce said she went to Minneapolis and passed out the brochures that they passed out at Quartsite, and that they have had 3,000 hits. They are also tracking closed escrows.

New Business

Membership

President Bastyr asked if anyone knew of Arrow Air Conditioning, Duane Woodland. President Bastyr reported that we had three applications for membership. The first one is from Steve Davis of Dorn Homes. Vice President Adams made a motion to accept the application for membership, and Director Ramsey seconded the motion. All were in favor of the motion. Motion approved. The second application for membership was from Warren Security. Vice President made a motion to accept the application for membership, and Treasurer Bouman seconded the motion. All were in favor of the motion. Motion approved. The third application for membership was from Golden Vertex Corp. Director Lopez-Rajaniemi made a motion to approve the application for membership, and Vice President Adams seconded the motion. All were in favor. Motion approved.

Chamber of Commerce

Director Lopez-Rajaniemi spoke about the Chamber of Commerce and of much work needs to be done to it. She reported that the Matadors and the Women’s Council have are paying half for air conditioning. Chris Barton, our guest at the Board Meeting, was representing the Chamber of Commerce when she talked to the Board regarding the repair and maintenance issues they have concerning the Chamber of Commerce. She said the Chamber Board would like someone from the Contractors walk around and assess what needs to be done to fix the Chamber. They would want to see what the cost would be. Vice President Adams made a suggestion that the Contractors should “step up”. The Chamber is non-profit. Another suggestion was that the Academy of Building Industries help out. There are too many “conflicts of interest” if some of our members do the assessment. There was a motion on the floor to have the Contractors get Gary Arfons to check on what needs to be done and prioritize the work that needs to be done to the Chamber. Vice President Adams made a motion to have Gary Arfons to check on what needs to be done for the Chamber, and Treasurer Bouman seconded the motion. All were in favor. Motion approved.

Minutes

President Bastyr asked if everyone had read the May Board Minutes. President Bastyr asked for a motion to approve the May Board Minutes. Vice President Adams made a motion to approve the Minutes, and Director Ramsey seconded the motion. All were in favor. Motion passed.

Academy of Building Industries

Treasurer Bouman reported to the Board that Dr. Kelly Booth filled the vacancy of the Board of Academy of Building Industries. He also said that they had 17 graduates this year. They also are getting a lot of freshmen entering the new school year.

Elections

President Bastyr reported that Elections will be tomorrow night. Director Ramsey again said he would step down if someone else wanted to be elected to the Board.

Motion To Adjourn

President Bastyr asked for a motion to adjourn. Vice President Adams made a motion to adjourn and it was seconded by Director Ramsey. All were in favor. Motion passed. Meeting adjourned at 12:55 p.m.
